Vision Tests

To maintain good vision, frequent vision screenings and periodic visual exams are necessary. This means that an awareness of inadequate vision or any vision changes can be noted, acted upon and monitored over a period of time.

We acknowledge the recommendations contained in the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission Technical Report ‘Eyesight Testing of Users of screen based Equipment (SBE) [NOHSC : 10004 (1992)]’.

Employees to be tested

The following categories of employees are recommended to be tested.

• All employees who in the course of their work spend 25 per cent or more of their time on SBE should be routinely tested.

• Those employees who in the course of their work spend 25 per cent or more of their time on SBE and are over the age of 40 should be tested every two years, or any employee that experiences visual problems irrespective of their age.

• For employees who in the course of their work spend less than 25 per cent of their time on SBE, testing should be performed when circumstances indicate the necessity.

• Vision testing may also be indicated for employees who in the course of their work rely on good vision for demanding or intensive operations that are critical for safety.
