Screen time can damage your eyes. Testing can help you prevent it.

It’s a simple as that, really. If you know an employee’s eyes are being affected by constant screen time, then you can take measures to prevent the damage becoming permanent, or getting even worse.

Vision screening test, who needs to be tested?

We recognise the recommendations in the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission Technical Report ‘Eyesight Testing of Users of Screen Based Equipment (SBE) [NOHSC : 10004 (1992)], which identifies the following categories of employees should be sent for a vision screening test.

Over 25% of time on a screen

So if you work a regular eight hour day, that’s only two hours a day in front of a computer, or screen of any kind. Employees falling into this category should have a routine vision screening test.

Over 25% of time on a screen, and over 40 years of age

Same as above, but your eyesight naturally deteriorates as you get older, so a vision screening test should be performed every two years for these employees.

Anyone with visual problems

Irrespective of age, anyone who has experienced issues in this regard should have a vision screening test every two years.

Anyone who needs good vision for work

If you rely on good vision for demanding, or intensive operations that are critical for safety, then it’s highly recommended you have a regular vision screening test.

This list shouldn’t exclude common sense, and any employee who’s vision is potentially impaired by the work they carry out, should have a vision screening test when circumstances indicate it’s necessary.
